A sex crime conviction can lead to extremely severe penalties, including prison time and substantial fines, and social consequences that will follow you for the rest of your life.
Some commonly charged sex crimes in the state of Ohio include:
- Sexual battery
- Rape
- Sexual contact with a minor
- Sexual exploitation
- Child pornography
- Prostitution
- Solicitation
- Child molestation
- Internet sex crimes
- Lewd and lascivious acts
- Public indecency
- Voyeurism
- Procuring
- Importuning
In 2008, the federal Adam Welsh Act (AWA) became law in Ohio. This act classifies sex offenders into three different categories:
- Tier I – Offenders must register with the county sheriff at least once every year for 15 years. Some Tier I offenses include importuning, sexual contact with a minor, sexual imposition, voyeurism, and child pornography.
- Tier II – Offenders in this category must register with the county sheriff every 180 days for 25 years. Some Tier II offenses include compelling prostitution, child endangering, and sexual contact with a minor.
- Tier III – Offenders in this tier must register with the county sheriff every 90 days for life. Some Tier III offenses include rape, sexual battery, murder or aggravated murder with sexual motivation, and gross sexual imposition.
In addition to stiff prison or jail penalties, a person can be required to register as a sexual offender under AWA or Megan’s Law. Registration can come with additional restrictions on where you can go, live, or who you can be around.
