Juvenile Criminal Charges Can Have Long Term Consequences
Just because your child is a minor doesn’t mean they escape criminal liability for choices they have made or circumstances they found themselves caught in. Juveniles can be charged with crimes and punished with jail time, long term lock up, detention, work programs, and even counseling. Juveniles can also face sex offender registration and lockdown treatment for committing a sex crime. Not all criminal convictions as a juvenile can be sealed or expunged, causing your child to have a tarnished record for the rest of their life.
Certain criminal charges could cause your juvenile to face bind-over or transfer to adult court. This means they would be forced to defend themselves in the adult criminal system where they would also be punished as an adult. Not all bind-over cases are automatic and there is a lot that can be done to avoid your child being moved to the adult criminal court.
Even events that happen at school or school events and activities can result in criminal charges. A fight at a football game, on recess, or having a knife in your backpack can result in a suspension or expulsion from school. In addition to facing educational consequences, your child could be criminally charged and prosecuted. Defending the education hearings and criminal charges is serious and should not be taken lightly, even for a juvenile.
