Sex Offender Registration and Restrictions Are Real
The news media, politicians, and the general public have many misconceptions about sex offender laws and what sex offender restrictions really do. The laws being created in this area are continually becoming more restrictive. The penalties for violating registration and sex offender restrictions are harsh.
Public perception plays a large role in the creation of laws in this area that often times don’t make sense, are over burdensome, and violate Constitutional rights. The sex offender registry lumps all offenders together making it impossible for the public to know who is a real danger and who fell victim to the system.
Many times those convicted of sex charges and sex crimes are left in the dark, without the ability to have their questions answered. Sex offender registration requirements can have lifelong effects and the residency restrictions can have consequences that involve the offender’s family as well.
Imagine not being able to attend your child’s school activities and sporting events. Even worse, imagine not being able to drive into the school parking lot to drop your child off each day. Ever wonder what would happen if you were forced to move from your home, leave your family living there while you live somewhere else just to comply with the law. No one believes their own children will be taken away just because they marry someone who is on the registry. These are the realities those on the sex offender registry face.
Understanding Your Rights and Find Answers
Sex offender registration and residency restriction laws are continually changing and becoming more restrictive. Political pressure supports prosecuting attorneys pushing for harsh punishment and compliance with the laws. Court rulings have dramatic effects on what laws can be enforced and how. Keeping up on these constantly changing laws and rulings is important to knowing and understanding your rights and responsibilities as a registrant.
Knowing and understanding theses sex crime laws is also important to protect your family; whether that is your children, step-children, wife, or parents. New laws are being created that limit what social networking cites a registrant can belong to, such as: Twitter, Facebook, and Linkedin. In some states registrants are required to provide their email and social media passwords. Registrants in Kentucky are now required to submit to DNA samples and fingerprinting. Ohio sex offender registrants can be required to register in multiple counties depending on where they work, live, or go to school.
